Waymo Set to Debut Autonomous Ride-Hailing Service to Select Arizona Users in December

Waymo’s commercial driverless car service is set to launch in early December, according to someone familiar with the company’s plans (via Bloomberg). The service won’t be branded as a „Waymo“ platform, however, and will receive a new name and compete directly with car-hailing apps Uber and Lyft.

The launch will be small, with only a couple hundred authorized riders in the suburbs around Phoenix, Arizona and covering about 100 square miles. This is the same tactic that Waymo has used in previous tests, and reports about the upcoming autonomous ride-hailing service being tested in Arizona began appearing one year ago.

Apple Offers Rare Look Inside Mesa, Arizona Data Center

Apple doesn’t often allow people to visit its data centers, which are located across the country, but The Arizona Republic was recently given a tour of Apple’s Mesa Arizona data center, formerly the site of GT Advanced.

The Mesa Arizona facility spans 1.3 million square feet, with long, sparse hallways equipped with servers. Apple calls the Mesa site its „global data command“ center, which employs a „handful“ of employees working in 10-hour shifts to oversee Apple’s operations data. 150 employees total are employed at the data center.

Self-Driving Uber Car Kills Pedestrian in Arizona, Accident Could Have Implications for Autonomous Vehicle Testing

An autonomous test vehicle being tested by Uber struck and killed a woman in Tempe, Arizona late Sunday night, marking what appears to be the first pedestrian killed by an autonomous vehicle, reports The New York Times.

The Uber vehicle in question was in an autonomous driving mode with a human safety driver at the wheel, and the woman who was struck was crossing the street outside of a crosswalk, according to local police. No other details on the accident are available at this time.

Apple Maps Transit Directions Now Available in Tucson, Arizona

Apple recently updated its Maps app to add transit directions and data for Tucson, Arizona. Transit directions have been available in Phoenix, Arizona since October of 2017, but transit information for Tucson appears to be new.

Apple Maps users in Tucson can now select public transportation routes when getting directions between two locations, with SunTran bus lines available as a transit transportation option. Amtrak routes are also available, and have been for some time.

Apple has not yet added Tucson to the website where it lists locations where transit directions are available, but it should be added in the near future.
