Qualcomm and Apple Partnership Crumbled Over Fears Apple Would Leak Qualcomm Software to Competitors

Apple and Qualcomm are embroiled in a bitter legal battle over licensing and royalty fees that’s lasted for two years now and has led to the breakdown of the relationship between the two companies, but there may have been other factors in the breakup.

Leaked emails between Apple COO Jeff Williams and Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf seen by Bloomberg suggest the two companies may have cut ties over software access.

iPad Putting Pressure on Windows and Android Tablet Competitors, Says Strategy Analytics

Despite the worldwide tablet market declining in shipments for 14 consecutive quarters, the iPad is seeing growth, and regaining market share over its competitors, according to research firm Strategy Analytics.

Earlier this week, Apple reported that it sold 11.55 million iPads in the second quarter of 2018, spanning April 1 through June 30. Those sales gave Apple a 28.2 percent share of the worldwide tablet market in the second quarter, its highest in that period since 2013, according to Strategy Analytics.

Apple Losing Ground to Android Competitors in India and China Due to Local Market Challenges

A pair of reports out this morning highlight Apple’s ongoing struggles in India and China ahead of the company’s Q2 2018 earnings results coming tomorrow, May 1. Within India, Apple has been dethroned as the country’s top selling high-end smartphone maker in the January-March period, losing out to Samsung.

Specifically looking at India’s „premium price segment“ (devices priced above 30,000 rupees, or $452), Apple’s market share was at 18 percent in the first calendar quarter of 2018, compared to 45 percent in the year-ago quarter. European Regulators Concerned Apple’s Proposed Shazam Acquisition Could Hurt Competitors Like Spotify

The European Commission today announced it has opened an in-depth investigation into Apple’s proposed acquisition of Shazam.

The regulators are concerned that the merger could reduce choice for users of streaming music services in Europe. In particular, they believe that Apple could gain access to sensitive data that could allow Apple to directly target its competitors‘ customers and encourage them to switch to Apple Music.

While the European Commission did not name any specific services, Apple Music’s biggest rival in Europe is Spotify, headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. Other competitors include Deezer, Tidal, and Google Play Music.
