Ming-Chi Kuo Says Apple Considering Lower-Priced HomePod After Potentially Lackluster Sales

HomePod shipments „could be far below market expectations“ this year, according to reputable KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

„Our understanding is that the market expects HomePod shipments to arrive at 5-10 million units in the 2018 fiscal year, versus our forecast of only 2.0-2.5 million units,“ wrote Kuo, in a research note obtained by MacRumors.

Kuo believes the „major miss“ in HomePod shipments could be attributable to product design and pricing, among other factors.

China Times Echoes Poor HomePod Sales and Rumors About Possible Lower-Priced Version

A new supply chain report out of Taiwan echoes a recent Bloomberg News story suggesting that HomePod sales have been lackluster, but as with most channel checks, it can be difficult to draw accurate conclusions.

Namely, the China Times claims that Apple has reduced its HomePod shipment forecast to 200,000 units or less per month in the second quarter, down from around 500,000 units per month in the first quarter, due to lower-than-expected sales. Apple is also said to revise down its shipment forecast for all of 2018.

Apple Cuts HomePod Orders After Sales Prove to Be Lackluster

Apple’s HomePod hasn’t ended up selling as well as the company was hoping, leading it to cut orders with suppliers, reports Bloomberg.

In late March, nearly two month after the HomePod first became available for purchase, Apple reportedly lowered its sales forecasts and dropped some orders with Inventec, the company responsible for manufacturing the HomePod. HomePod inventory in retail locations is said to be „piling up“ with some stores selling „fewer than 10 HomePods a day.“

PayPal Discounts $100 iTunes Gift Cards to $85 as iTunes Launches New Movie Sales

PayPal’s Digital Gifts eBay storefront today launched another 15 percent discount on $100 App Store and iTunes gift cards, which the company has been doing once a month since February. While the deal lasts, those with a PayPal account can purchase the $100 iTunes gift cards for $85, which will then be delivered via email a few hours later. The gift cards will only be valid on purchases made in the United States App and iTunes Stores.
