Apple’s Services Revenue Up 17% Year-Over-Year in 4Q 2018, Hits All Time High of $10B

Apple’s services category, which includes iTunes, the App Store, the Mac App Store, Apple Music, iCloud, Apple Pay, and AppleCare, continues to be an increasingly important revenue driver for Apple, and services growth is once again at an all time high.

During the fourth fiscal quarter of 2018, Apple’s services segment brought in $10 billion in revenue, up 17 percent from the $8.5 billion services earned in the fourth quarter of 2017.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, services growth was actually at 27 percent if a one-time favorable adjustment from the year-ago quarter is excluded.

Multiple iCloud Services Experiencing Issues

Several iCloud services are experiencing problems this afternoon, according to Apple’s System Status Page.

iCloud Drive, iCloud Mail, iCloud Keychain, iCloud Contacts, iCloud Calendar, Mail Drop, Find My iPhone, and more are performing „slower than normal“ for some users.

The problem has been ongoing since 8:51 a.m. Pacific Time this morning, and there’s no word on when it might clear up.

If you’ve been noticing problems with iCloud services, this outage is the reason why. We’ll update this post when the problem is resolved.

‚Five Eyes‘ Governments Urge Tech Companies to Build Backdoors into Encrypted Services

Five nations including the U.S. and the U.K. have urged tech companies to comply with requests to build backdoors into their encrypted services, or potentially face legislation requiring them to do so by law.

The statement is a result of a meeting last week between the „Five Eyes“ intelligence sharing countries, which include the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

In a published memo, the governments claim that the use of such backdoors for accessing encrypted data would respect personal rights and privacy, and be limited only to criminal investigations by law enforcement.

Prince’s Estate Launches 23 of His Albums and New Anthology on Apple Music and Other Streaming Services

Sony Legacy announced over the summer that it had obtained the rights to release the „bulk“ of Prince’s back catalog, namely the albums he debuted after he left Warner Bros. in the mid-nineties. Today, The Prince Estate digitally released 23 total Prince albums that first launched between 1995 and 2010 onto „all major streaming services,“ including Apple Music and Spotify.
