Apple Warns Chinese iPhone Ban Would Force a Settlement With Qualcomm, Result in ‚Irreparable Harm‘ to Apple and Others

In a court filing related to the ongoing dispute with Qualcomm that has resulted in a partial ban on iPhone sales in China, Apple this week warned that upholding the ban would cause „truly irreparable harm“ to Apple, other companies, and consumers if Apple is forced to withdraw its devices from the market, according to Bloomberg.

The ban would cost Apple millions of dollars a day and affect both the Chinese government and consumers, the company added, noting it has created 5 million jobs in China across the supply chain and third-party software developers.

Yahoo Agrees to Settlement Following Massive 2013 Data Breach, Including $50M Fund for Victims

The data breach that affected all 3 billion Yahoo accounts beginning in 2013 is getting a bit of closure this week, with a settlement agreement between Yahoo and the Northern District Court of California (via Engadget). In the settlement, Yahoo has agreed to put $50 million into a fund for victims of the breach, provide two years of credit monitoring from AllClear, and a few other benefits for victims. The settlement is still awaiting court approval.

Qualcomm and Taiwanese Regulators Reach Settlement ‚Reversing Most‘ of $773M Fine

Nearly one year after Qualcomm received a $773 million fine by Taiwan’s Fair Trade Commission regarding how the company prices smartphone chips and patents, Qualcomm this week reached a settlement agreement with the Taiwanese regulators that „reverses most“ of the $773 million fine.

In the settlement, Qualcomm will invest $700 million over the next five years to „boost research activities in Taiwan.“ The company will also stop paying fines and retains the right to charge manufacturers royalties on its technology. Amazon Sending New Round of Credits to E-Book Buyers as Part of Apple Price Fixing Settlement

Customers who purchased a Kindle e-book between April 1, 2010 and May 21, 2012 may be receiving a credit from Amazon this morning as the retailer continues distributing funds from an antitrust lawsuit levied against Apple back in 2013 by the United States Justice Department.

Emails were sent out to eligible customers in the United States this morning, and Amazon has also set up a website that will list available credits for those who are eligible for a refund.

Apple, along with five other publishers including HarperCollins, Simon and Schuster, Hachette Book Group, Macmillan, and Penguin, was found guilty of conspiring to inflate the prices of e-books to weaken [...]
