Apple is actively building its own cellular modem chip for future iPhones, according to a paywalled report by The Information today.
The report, citing a person briefed on the plans, claims that Apple has engineers working on the project close to its headquarters in Northern California. For several months, Apple has also been actively hiring engineers in San Diego, where the company has an office with a growing Wireless Architecture team.

Apple won’t release an iPhone that can connect to 5G data networks until at least 2020, claims a new report out today.
According to Bloomberg’s sources, Apple is planning to delay its support for the next generation of high-speed mobile services coming in 2019, just as it did for previous generations.
As with 3G and 4G, the two previous generations of mobile technology, Apple will wait as long as a year after the initial deployment of the new networks before its main product gets the capability to access them, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing the company’s plans.

When the new Mac mini and MacBook Air debuted in late October, Apple added an online store listing for an upcoming Blackmagic eGPU Pro.
At the time it was first introduced, the listing for the new eGPU said that it would be released in late November, but as pointed out by 9to5Mac, the listing now says that the device won’t be coming until December.

Apple today released iOS 12.1 with support for the digital eSIM that will allow for dual-SIM functionality on the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR, but eSIM support isn’t going to be immediately available from U.S. carriers.
AT&T, for example, is telling customers that eSIM activations are being delayed until later in the year due to technical issues in part related to Visual Voicemail.
According to one AT&T store manager who spoke to MacRumors, retail outlets have been told that AT&T is not supporting dual-SIM or eSIM at the current time, with stores advised not to sell eSIM cards to customers.
